University of Utah Provost's Office records 1962-1973

Between 1962 and 1973, the Provost was the chief academic officer of the University of Utah. The Provost reported directly to the President and supervised the Academic Vice President, the Medical Affairs Vice President, the Research Vice President, and the Dean of Students. In 1973 the position of Provost was abolished in a general administrative reorganization. During the period covered by these records, Sterling M. McMurrin (1962-1965), Alfred C. Emery (1965-1968), and Thomas C. King (1968-1973) served as Provost. This collection contains correspondence, memoranda, and reports to and from the office of the Provost. Principal subjects discussed are budgets, faculty, academic matters, and long-range planning. Included is correspondence between the Provost's office and individual colleges, departments, and academic centers.

Sterling Moss McMurrin (1914-1996), author, scholar and educational administrator, served as U. S. Commissioner of Education under President John F. Kennedy from 1961 to 1962.
